Silchester School is keen to promote sport as part of a healthy lifestyle and for the enjoyment of all its children. It offers a solid range of sport as part of the curriculum, including netball, football, cricket, athletics, gymnastics, dance, rounders and swimming at Tadley pool in Year 5. The school also provides the opportunity for other sports to be experienced both within school (tag rugby, hockey, tennis) and as after school activities often using external experts.
During the autumn term the Basingstoke Hockey Club provide coaching for Y3 and Y6 in hockey. Also in the autumn term, Aldermaston Rugby Club provide tag rugby coaching for all year groups within the school day and also provide after school coaching for Y3 and Y4. Silchester is very proud of their Year 3/4 rugby team, for coming 2nd in the September 2005 Thatcham inter-schools tournament against 6 other schools.
Many of the Year 3 children also play for Aldermaston Rugby Club and in September 05 were invited by London Irish to play an inter-teams tournament at the Stoop. They proudly won the Fair Play award, going on to play a match at Twickenham at the half time of a Double Header Guinness Premiership game, in front of a crowd of 30,000 spectators. Since then London Irish has also invited them to play at Madejeski stadium at the half time of one of their home games.
The highlight of the academic year in sporting terms is Sports Day. This is held in the Summer Term, with all children participating. Every child is selected to participate in one or more races by their teacher, in order to represent their House. Races include Sprints, Egg and Spoon, Obstacle races and for the older years Tug of War. Parents are also encouraged to take part in an obstacle race. There is always great excitement and fierce competition to see which House will get the crowning glory! The event culminates with a whole school picnic.
For those who are keen to play sports competitively, Silchester has teams in netball, football, cricket, rounders, tag rugby and athletics all of which compete against local schools in the area.
