Special Educational Needs (SEN)

Silchester School has a specialist Special Educational Needs teacher who is supported by Learning Support Assistants. This enables children with communication, learning, emotional, physical or sensory difficulties to receive specialist support. Learning Support Assistants (LSAs) are employed to meet the needs of individual children as required, or to assist Class Teachers in the support of children with Special Educational Needs.

Silchester School has a Special Needs Policy as required by the 1993 Education Act. The information contained in the policy is available for parents at school.

Access to the curriculum

Pupils with SEN are provided with a broad and balanced curriculum including the National Curriculum and the Foundation Stage Curriculum. The Class Teacher or one of the special needs team may provide extra support both within the classroom and separate groups. Children with SEN participate in all aspects of school life and are given appropriate support to do so.

Arrangements for Able Children

A number of pupils are successful in scholarship examinations during Year Six and the school’s SAT results are good. Each class teacher structures their lesson plan in conjunction with the Able Child Coordinator to cater for Able Children in their class. We believe that all children should be challenged and encouraged to reach their full potential
