Accessibility
Standards
Silchester Primary School strives for equality of access for all, including people with disabilities, across our web-enabled materials.
The Silchester Primary School website meets the following design and accessibility standards:
If you do have problems accessing content, please do not hesitate to contact us - we will make every effort to help you.
Access Keys
Visitors can navigate to the main areas of this site by using the access keys provided. Pressing "Alt" (on Microsoft™ Windows™ - "Ctrl" on Macintosh™); and "h", for example, will open the homepage, while "Alt" and "s" will open the school information page.
NB. Some web browsers, notably Internet Explorer,™ require access key users to press "enter" after an access key combination in order to open the page.
The navigation options at the top of the page have access key codes assigned according to their first letter:
| Page | Access Key |
|---|---|
| Home | h |
| Profile | p |
| Academic | a |
| School Information | s |
| Contact | c |
| Legal | l |
Tabbed Browsing
Visitors may also use the "tab" key to select links on the page. Once a link is active (a dotted line will appear around the link), use the "enter key" to open the linked page.
Enlarging the text size on the webpage
This guide has been designed to make our website more accessible. Follow our step-by-step guide to make the site easier for you to read.
On many web browsers, holding down the "Ctrl" key while moving the scroll wheel on a compatible mouse will increase and decrease the text size on the screen. You can also do this by pressing "Ctrl" and "+" (to increase) or "Ctrl" and "-" (to decrease).
However, increasing the text size many times can reduce the legibility of the text since the visual presentation of a page can constrain column widths, for example. In this instance, we recommend that you use one of the many web browsers built to improve accessibility. These browsers allow visitors to switch off style-sheets, removing text from stylistic constraints and presenting a text-only interface. Visitors can then increase text style freely, limited only by the available size of their screen.
Though we do not have the resources to recommend software, we are familiar with Mozilla Firefox which is free to download and use, and supports these features.
Step 1
Select "view" from the tool bar; to do this either:
- Use your mouse to scroll over "view";
- Press "alt" on your keyboard and using your arrow keys to scroll along to "view".
Step 2
You now need to select your preferred text size; to do this either:
- Use your mouse to scroll over "text size..." and then left click on your preference. Your selection will be marked with a dot;
- Use the arrow keys to select "text size..." and again, move your keys to select your preferred size.
Once you have changed the settings of your computer they will remain the same. To change the settings back to normal, simply follow steps 1 and 2 and change the size accordingly.
