School Governors

There are 16 governors at Silchester School. All of them are volunteers. As a corporate body, the governors are responsible for setting up a strategic framework for the school, setting it’s aims and objectives, setting policies and targets for achieving the objectives and reviewing progress. Silchester School is a voluntary aided Church school which means that the church (through the foundation governors which make up the majority of the governing body), has a larger say in setting the direction and ethos of the school than in a local authority school. Legally the governors are the employers of staff at Silchester.

The composition of the governing body is prescribed by regulations, with different requirements according to the type of school and number of governors. Our present Instrument of Government provides for the following:

  • 3 parent governors (elected)
  • 1 local authority governor (usually nominated by our county councillor)
  • 3 staff governors (the head teacher, a teacher and a member of the non-teaching staff)
  • 9 foundation governors of whom at least 3 at the time of their appointment or reappointment are parents of the school

Much of the work of the governing body is carried out in committees. These are:

  • Finance and General Purposes – chair Daryl Barker
  • Personnel – chair Mel Wade
  • Admissions – chair Babs Rodgers

There are also working groups for governor communications and for the important religious dimension to the school.
