Welcome From Mrs Elliott
Welcome to the learning community at Silchester Primary School.
The school is very much a part of the small, rural village of Silchester in which it is situated. Silchester, regional winner and national runner-up of The Village of the Year 2009, is particularly recognised for its community links.
As a Church of England School we have close links with St Mary the Virgin Church. School and church services compliment our daily collective worship. The Christian ethos supports an atmosphere of mutual respect, where differences are celebrated, and opinions, customs and beliefs of others are valued.
The staff and governors work together to provide a safe, secure and caring environment, where children are encouraged to be independent, take risks and take responsibility for their learning and behaviour. Children’s individual needs and talents are recognised and supported, enabling them to reach their full potential. Individual success in all areas is celebrated.
We believe in maintaining a strong, active partnership with parents. Many opportunities will arise for parents to be involved in school life. Your children perform best when we work together. They feel particularly proud when parents attend class led worship.
The school provides a broad, balanced and inclusive curriculum, with a strong emphasis on learning through experience throughout Foundation, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.
The children will have many opportunities to visit places in the local area and beyond in order to support their learning, for example Southsea for a seaside study in year 2 and Silchester village for the study of the Romans, houses and homes and geography of the local area. Residential visits to Calshot Activity Centre for Year 6 and Ufton Court for year 5 are an important part of the upper school curriculum. Reading Synagogue is visited to support RE teaching and we visit a number of museums in London, Basingstoke and Reading to support the history curriculum.
In addition, we invite people into school to bring in expertise in specific areas e.g. a member of ‘Wise Moves’ to support dance teaching, a granddad who was an evacuee during the war, the rector to perform a baptism and many more. Themed days or weeks are planned, where all classes use a theme to link areas of the curriculum and enhance learning, e.g. healthy schools week, art week. These are often supported by an ‘expert’ visitor, who brings something new and exciting to the study.
We work very closely with schools in the Tadley area to offer even greater opportunities for learning. In 2008/09, across the local schools we held workshops and joint performances in dance and music. Small groups from each school enjoyed joining together for science and ICT days and we continue to compete against each other in a range of sport for all ages.
We look forward to welcome your child into our school.
Regards
Sue Elliott
